Braveheart Challenge 2010: On a morning that would have made even Tom Crean
shiver, 45 intrepid Bravehearts set of from Newcastle in polar
conditions to reach the warmth of the Kilbronney
Inn in Rostrevor. A big thank you to everyone for a
fantastic effort. This Sunday a presentation will be made and there will be
spot prizes galore. So head to Betty Dorans, after the walk, for the fun and
craic. |

Sperrintrek 2011: Winter Hill Walking Festival: Date: Sun 29th – 30th Jan
2011. Info: Sperrintrek is a series of
three walking weekends in the Sperrins Mountains,
an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. There will be two walks during each
weekend, with walkers having the opportunity to choose either a Grade A or

information: Mountaineering Ireland is delighted to support this safety
initiative by Bren Whelan in conjunction with Irish Mountain Rescue
Association (IMRA). As you know over the past number of winters we have seen
some serious incidents in the Irish Hills, which have resulted in
some extensive call out time for the Irish Mountain Rescue & Coastguard
service. This talk will be focused on raising the hillwalking,
mountaineering and public in general awareness of the difference between the
summer and winter mountain environment. Bren’s own background is as a
Mountaineering Instructor (MIC) and he is a member of the Association of
Mountaineering Instructors ( www.ami.org.uk ) , who have backed the

Everest veteran Gavin Bate to headline WAI/Mountainviews.ie winter
talks Date:

mountaineer and expedition leader Gavin Bate will be the headline speaker at
the Walkers Association of Ireland/Mountainviews.ie “Winter Walks”
presentation. Venue: Bewleys Hotel, Leopardstown, Dublin. Other speakers on the night include
the founder of Mountainviews.ie, Simon Stewart, Sharron Schwartz and Martin McCritchly. Mountainviews.ie is a social networking
website for Irish hillwalkers. Started in 2002, the
site accepts user contributions describing over 1,000 mountains and hills in

The Táin Walking
Festival (Carlingford/Omeath): Date: 5th - 6th
March. Information: Based in the medieval village of Carlingford,
the Táin Festival uses many of the historical
trails used by CúChulainn as the backdrop for this
variety of themed walks. Catering for all fitness levels, the range of walks
are inspired by the beautiful location of Carlingford
- some walks are along the peaks of the Cooley Mountains while others hug the
rugged shores of Carlingford Lough. Historical
walks explore the myths and legends of the famous Irish epic the Tain Bó Cuailgne
(Brown Bull of Cooley) as well as exploring the geology of the Cooley
mountains. For those staying in Carlingford, take

UFRC News: Ramblings, a half hour programme on Radio 4 is
coming to N.I. again. The first programme of the new series is on February
5th-likely to be the Divis one.. Stuart Maconie is the Presenter
for this series. |

He's a keen walker and is looking foward to doing six 'skyline' walks- the theme of
this series. UFRC has advised and assisted BBC on
co-ordination of the walk. Indeed five of our members are taking part in the
recording (on Divis mountain) on Friday 14th Jan. |

The Federation regrets to learn
of the death of Joss Lynam, which
took place on 9th January 2011
in Dublin. His interests in climbing and walking took him, over a long lifetime, to many countries and his
publications have been widely admired for their concise description of routes
undertaken. For many years, he was closely associated with the Mountaineering
Council of Ireland and its successor, Mountaineering Ireland. No
