Leave No Trace – the principles of
outdoor ethics. Following
on in our series about ‘Leave No Trace – principles of outdoor ethics, today
we cover one of the most important issues for Hill Walkers, and for the Wee
Binnians – ‘Dispose of waste properly’ |
|
|||||||
·
Take
litter home. It’s very simple – if you
bring it out, take back what’s left. That includes wrappers, cartons, bottles,
tins, fruit skins, bread crusts, cigarette butts and even spent matches! Don’t hide waste under a stone and don’t
feed the birds (see principle No3). ·
Toileting- human urine is more damaging
to the environment than animals, so be sure to urinate at least 30 meters
away from streams. Solid human waste
must be buried at least 150mm (6 inches) deep and 30 metres from any
stream. Take home used toilet paper
and hygiene products. ·
If camping, wash yourself and your dishes
well away from streams and use small amounts of biodegradable soap. Scatter strained dishwater. |
