Defending the Good Friday Agreement

Sinn Féin Assembly Group Leader, Newry Armagh MLA Conor Murphy, will travel to Enniscorthy on next Tuesday (18th February) to address a public meeting on the Good Friday Agreement.

As ongoing negotiations to restore the collapsed institutions enter a crucial stage, Mr Murphy, who has played a key role in the talks, will outline and discuss Sinn Féin's perspective on the negotiations to date and the urgent need to achieve full implementation of the agreement.

Speaking in advance, Cllr John Dwyer said: "Sinn Féin have been at the heart of the Peace Process since its inception. Despite the lack of will by the political leaders of unionism to embrace necessary change on this island, Sinn Féin has continued and will continue, to play a full role in meeting every challenge.

"This is an issue of democratic rights. The Good Friday Agreement belongs to all of us on this island. It is not the exclusive property of Tony Blair or David Trimble, to do with it as they will. It belongs equally as much to the voters in Ferns or Fethard, Ballyhack or Ballycanew, who voted for it.

"The admitted failure of the British government to fully implement the agreement has led to the current crisis.

"Every political party on this island has a role to play in ensuring the success of the Peace Process and must take due responsibility. Unfortunately, the full potential of the GFA has never yet been experienced because it has not yet been implemented in full.

"There is nothing more important than building peace and justice. Sinn Féin have demonstrated that we are committed to this process and will continue to be a positive force for change in the time ahead.

Others must also join with us in this work and ensure the full and faithful implementation of the agreement."

The meeting, to which all members of the public are invited, commences at 8 pm in Murphy Floods Hotel, Enniscorthy.
