Gorey District Manifesto

North Wexford at a crossroads

Despite experiencing a massive population increase, Gorey District has been severely neglected for decades by successive governments of all shades. Weak political representation has resulted in:

The worst roads in the county; lack of a major employer; a housing crisis; the South Eastern motorway and National Gas Grid bypassing the county; a severely crowded secondary school, traffic gridlock and lack of parking, a planning shambles…

Wexford has one of the lowest levels of disposable incomes and third level access per capita in the state.

It is time for change!

Healthcare:

  • No radiotheraphy in the South East, 4 casualty trolleys for a population of 120,000 and up to 30 waiting on trolleys in Wexford Hospital at times. Following an economic boom this is a disgrace.
  • Cllr. Jimmy Fleming, Sandra Ryan and Sinn Féin have led the campaign to upgrade Wexford General Hospital.
  • The threat to it's Accident & Emergency Department is a life or death issue for Gorey with proposals to move Wexford A&E to Waterford and Loughlinstown A&E to St. Vincent's.We are at a great distance from both! Wexford Sinn Féin have collected over 10,000 signatures so far opposing this.
  • Before the last election the government falsely promised to eliminate waiting lists and to provide extra hospital beds. However, the length of time a patient spends on a waiting list depends on their income. Sinn Féin wants a single waiting list with the provision of health care based on need alone.
  • There is no valid reason why an Irish National Health Service with free care and medication, funded by general taxation cannot be delivered.
  • The health of our citizens should be the government's greatest priority. Sinn Féin will accept nothing less.

    Housing:

The FF/PD Government has removed the first time buyers grant while at the same time increasing tax allowances for property speculators. People in need of housing have been sacrificed to facilitate a building boom whose driving force is profit. The wealth that exists should be directed into developing a building programme for those who need housing.

We want the expansion of Social Housing schemes like that at Walkers Field, Gorey. Sinn Féin has the political commitment to ensure that those who need homes get them.

    • Wexford's Sinn Féin councillors have proposed that the maximum allowable rent on local authority homes should be capped at 12% of the principal earners income.
    • Substandard housing - ensuring that issue receives the highest priority.
    • There should be a rent allowance for older local authority houses - central heating/pvc windows/insulation/wiring should all be upgraded for tenants..
    • Developers to be forced to properly finish Gorey's estates, public lighting, ramps, green space, play areas etc

    Education

Gorey Community School is at breaking point with 1,600 students (250 above the recommended maximum) The government has ignored the crisis. With over 1,000 new houses coming on stream, the lack of forward planning by our local politicians is obvious.

We want to see a new secondary school to cater for this and refurbishment of run down primary schools and state funded creche facilities

    Community Facilities, Drugs and Crime

The provision of leisure and amenity areas for our youth has been consistently neglected in Gorey while only public outrage prevented rezoning of the Showgrounds which is still under threat.

The town has become a satellite of Dublin and is witnessing a spiralling drug, under age drinking and crime problem.

    • Cllr. Jimmy Fleming, Sandra Ryan and Sinn Féin want proper youth facilities; the growing heroin problem to be nipped in the bud and a full time Garda drug squad for North Wexford.

    Waste Management - Service Charges

Sinn Féin are the only party in Wexford to present consistent opposition to unfair service charges which are used as a revenue collection device only and which penalise the householder while doing nothing to promote proper waste management policy. The council are now acting on our proposals introducing door to door collection of seperated recyclables.

    We are:

  • Opposed to incineration.
  • For community consultation on the siting of telecommunications masts.
  • Ready to fight any proposals to introduce domestic water charges.

Local Government - Upgrade Gorey Town Council

Republicans have always campaigned for the maximum decentralisation of power and resources to local councils.Cllr. Jimmy Fleming and Sinn Féin and Sinn Féin want to see Gorey upgraded to full Town Council status like other towns in the county.

    Gaeilge

Tacaíocht do Ghaelscoil Ghuaire agus ainmneacha Gaeilge ar eastáit tithíochtha.

    Planning

    • Opposing Wexford County Councils' excessive planning/development levies

    Transport, Roads and Traffic

  • SF have long campaigned for urgent investment for Gorey's run down streets and crumbling pavements and for a state car insurance system to reduce costs for young drivers.
  • Investment in public transport, improving Gorey - Dublin commuter bus/rail service and adequate parking facilities.

SINN FÉIN - SAOIRSE, COTHROMAÍOCHT, SÍOCHÁIN
