Joints in use

Why use joints?

One of the best methods of connecting pieces of wood together is the use of joints. Being able to make joints well is a skill in itself.

Using joints allows you to counteract the principal forces which are likely to break up your project. (I have illustrated the main forces on the the 'Strength of Timber' page).

Choosing the correct joint for a particular situation is very important. The joint you use must:

  • be strong enough to withstand the expected forces
  • help to improve the appearance of (enhance) the project
  • have as large a gluing area as possible
