Original Hedgerow, leg 2.

Bright and sunny.

Here's a new discovery. It appears the Ichneumonid  is laying more than one egg in each Sawfly larva. The following sequence shows that the eggs are injected in various points along the larva. The sequence took approximately 30 seconds to shoot.

I'm calling this shot "The puncture".

I know that some people will have difficulty with the scale of this whole episode, so I've included this shot for illustration. The whole frame shows one Willow leaf. The ichneumon is shown just to right of centre.

A couple of other Ichneumonids were showing more than a passing interest in the Sawfly larvae. I didn't see the second one laying.

When one leaf is finished, the larvae troop off to another one.

And this shot shows why it is necessary. This is day 4, and already most of this branch is eaten.
