Lived with his grandfather Joseph in Killacoona. Got a jobworking for William Forster, landlord at Ballynure (relation toso-called "Herr-Fosters", last owners of Ballinure??).--Ran Forster'sTurkish Baths at Annalore. Forster started a savings bank and Richardworked as a clerk. During the Famine years, he was a clerk atKilleevan "Porridge Cross", where porridge was distributed, usually atcrossroads.
Joseph and grandson Richard leased a 7-acre plot of land inKillacoona from William Forster as of Oct. 1847. (Land added later).
Richard is described as being like Canon Eddie--kindly, humorous,at ease with people, drinking a little but smoking quite a bit, reading a good deal, working hard.
Richard emigrated to the USA for only 3 months, having fallen onsome hard times. He returned to Killacoona. Later he had bad luckand lost some animal stock, but eventually became prosperous and wassaid to have the first mowing machine in the area. He also apparentlyowned a small pub in Monaghan, reportedly on Park St., later owned byJohn Lynch in 1980. Richard lived around Kileevan, andlegend has it he sat up and waited three nights for his pig to haveher litter of piglets. When only one piglet was born after all thewaiting, he was so enraged, he exclaimed to the pig, "Have you noshame!" and he punched the mother pig and accidently killed her. Thispig story out-lived him and was told in 1997, 100 years after hisdeath, in the kitchen of Josephine McGuinn Greenan.
