The audience arrives in the space. Forty Community Cast actors are already
present though not performing. They stand faced against walls or turned
away from us, some lie on the ground face down. The HELL set is at the
Tower end of the Cathedral ruins.
When the lights fade the HELL area begins to animate. The Community Cast
begins to move towards the HELL area of the space. They are moving in
reverse. This motif of the world being in backward motion is reflected
in the music. The cast speaks words that are in reverse. We hear a voice
cry…
‘My God, My God, why has thou forsaken me?’
A huge Crucifix appears and plummets into HELL.
Lost Souls
“The curtain in the temple is rent asunder, the earth shakes,
the rocks split apart, the tower of Babel crashes, the world is split
into many voices”. The whole space is in a state of reflux. The
cast animate the HELL CARTS, climbing and crawling, creating a disturbing
impression of HELL and of lost souls
We hear a loud knocking: Jesus says ‘Open the gates and let in the
messiah’.
Hell says: ‘Shut hard the gates of brass, you are not the messiah’.
Jesus is disturbed. The lost souls propel him into proving who he is,
before he takes his final breath. They act out scenes from his life in
front of him.
A Vision in his Mind
Two ‘lost souls’ separate out and appear in a setting under
a tree. Jesus is led there. For a moment he thinks they are Adam and Eve
in the Garden of Eden. He tries to communicate with them he is unable.
He realises he is seeing his parents and himself as a two-year old child
Jesus. Joseph and Mary are about to offer a sacrifice of a dove to consecrate
their first-born to the Lord.
Simeon appears and talks of Jesus as a child of destiny.
Prove you are the Messiah
Jesus struggles to speak with Joseph and Mary as the vision dissolves.
Loud knocking brings us back to Hell
‘Child of destiny? Who is it you try to deceive. You are not the
one’
He calls to Hell to show more of his life as proof of who he is.
