LAND AND CLIMATE
The climate in Norway varies a great deal from one region to another but the four seasons are distinct throughout the whole country.
The northern part of Norway is often called 'the land of the midnight sun'. For ten weeks in the summer months the sun shines day and night. This twenty-four hour daylight is caused by the tilt of the earth which brings the North Pole closer to the sun. The people enjoy this short but warm summer, and spend the long evenings out of doors. In winter the days are short and dark. The Norwegian coastline extends about 2,470km (about 1,700miles including all the fjords and offshore islands) the coastline totals about 21,930km (about 13,620miles). The islands known locally as the skerry guard, form a protected waterway along the coast. The country's name meaning " northern way" reflects its importance in linking many small fjords and valley communities that are otherwise separated by rugged mountains.
