Rathbarry Tidy Town and the Environment.
(Part 1)

How society deals with its waste has become one of the big environmental issues of our time. The plain facts are that we are continuing to increase the amount of waste we are producing as long as we produce waste we must find appropriate and resposible ways of dealing with it!

European and Irish waste policy is based on a hierarchy of options with prevention the most desirable and disposal the least desirable. The stark fact is that over 90% of municipal waste is land filled in Ireland!

We need to move away from this situation to one where we produce less waste and dispose of  less waste.

We also need to move to a situation where all waste management facilities are operated in a professional and competent manner and do not cause environmental pollution and nuisance to the public. These changes will take time and effort and will require commitment from ALL in our society!
