6th Class Trip To Wales

In May 2004 the sixth class pupils, accompanied by Mrs. Barry and Mr. and Mrs.Shanahan embarked on an exchange visit to Llanarth Primary School, West Wales. They spent four busy days in Llanarth, meeting their pen-pals and making several new friends. Read the children's accounts of the trip on the "Pupil's Work" page. Click here for a photo of 6th Class 2004, when they returned to Shanbally after their memorable trip to Llanarth.

June 2004- The Teddy Bears Picnic.

At the end of each school year the children in Junior and Senior Infants and the Language Class bring their teddies on a Teddy Bears Picnic up to the local Shamrocks field. This year they headed off, bright and early, one morning in June. The sixth class pupils accompanied the children and their teachers so that there would be plenty of helpers all round. Each child carried their picnic and their favourite teddy or soft toy, which had been carefully chosen at home that morning. Sixth Class pupils helped to carry the balls, hoops, bean-bags, and indeed, the First-Aid Box and empty bags for rubbish. There was great excitement as the children reached the picnic spot. First the children played some games with their teddies. The teddies had great fun, racing, jumping, dancing and singing and playing "Musical Statues". Then they all sat down for a picnic. All the children (and the teddies!!) had lots of lovely goodies to eat. Some of the teddies then sat down for a rest while their lively owners carried on playing for quite a while! They rolled the hoops, kicked balls, had a ball relay race, hopped, skipped and jumped happily around the field.

All too soon it was time to return to the school. The tired teddies were cuddled in their owners arms all the way back to school. They arrived back just in time, as their Mums, Dads or minders were just arriving to collect them from school. Off they went, tired but happy after the wonderful Teddy Bears' Picnic.

During the year several children took part in various competitions in the locality and within the county. We are very proud of all the boys and girls who represented the school.

Here we mention some of the children who took part in these events.

  • The school had two winning teams in the Monkstown/Passage West Credit Union Quiz amongst other schools in the region and took part in the County Finals at under 11 and over 11 sections, which were held in Rochestown Park Hotel, representing Monkstown/Passage West Credit Union Chapter Area.

The teams were as follows:

Under 11: Sinéad McCarthy, Peter Barry, Laura Wilkins, Daniel Feehan

Over 11: Sarah McKenzie, Peter Twomey, Joseph Tate, Lisa O'Sullivan

(see photos in the photo gallery)

  • Several children won trophies and medals in the Cork Primary School Sports at Páirc Uí Chaoimh in June. Congratulations to all the boys and girls that took part. A special mention must go to Jessie O'Flynn who won her third County title in succession by winning the Under 10 sprint at this year's events- surely the Olympic Games beckons in the not too distant future !!

The Girls' Indoor Football Team won the South-East Football Blitz in March. It was ten years since we last won this competition in Shanbally NS.Well done to the girls and to their Coaches, Ms. Barry and Ms. Tuohy. The team was:

Lisa O'Sullivan, Donna Smyth, Shauna Jordan, Ciara Hurley,Yvonne O'Brien, Sorcha O'Brien,Laura McCarthy.

  • The boys and girls in Third and Fourth Classes took part in the Choral Verse Competition in the Ringaskiddy Youth Festival in May. They recited two poems-"The Visitor" and "Dogs" (a rap which the children had composed themselves). Even though they did not win this time, the adjudicator praised the group and congratulated them on their achievement. Well done to all the boys and girls and to Louise O'Sullivan and Ms. Barry who prepared the children for the stage.
  • The boys and girls took part in the Sciath na Scol Football and Hurling competitions during the year.In October 2003 the Football League was held and Shanbally defeated three east Cork schools, to reach the Final in Pairc Ui Rinn. Unfortunately they lost to Ballynoe NS in a well-contested game. The team tried their best and were a credit to their Trainers, Mr. Clifford and Mr. Shanahan. The Hurling Competition was held after Easter and again the team was drawn against three East-Cork schools. Even though they tried hard they were not as successful in the hurling this year. Let's hope that they will keep trying hard, and perhaps, win the "Double" next year !! The Sciath Na Scol team was as follows:

John O'Brien, Donna Smyth, Aaron Hickey, Lisa O'Sullivan, David Spillane,Jonathan Tuohy, Darragh O'Sullivan, Stephen Healy, Laura McCarthy, Adam Walsh, Alan Dunne, Joey Brady, David Barry, Darren Barry, Shane Horgan, Peter Barry, Paul O'Shea, James Raleigh.

  • David Spillane lined out against Kerry in the Cork Primary School Football game held in
Fitzgerald Stadium, Killarney on June 8th. He was also selected on the Cork Schoolboys
    Under 12 Soccer Team.
  • Bryan O'Leary is the school Chess Champion 2004.
  • Donna Smyth was part of the Cork Centenary Camogie Team.
