The "Garden City" of Christchurch lies on the level Canterbury Plains that sweep away westwards to the foothills of the Southern Alps mountain ranges. The Port Hills to the south-east bar the way to the port of Lyttleton and to the east lies the Pacific Ocean.

The largest of the South Island centres, Christchurch retains the essentially English nature of it's origins. The willow and oak lined Avon River meanders through it's heart while a lofty neo-Gothic cathedral presides over "The Square". Clustered stone buildings are not merely old but have a medieval air, and statues, they are everywhere.

Veteran Tram cars once again roll along the streets on a circular route ideal for exploring. Parks, gardens and trees abound throughout the city, and with the more leisurely pace of life it is not hard to find a restaurant, bar or coffee shop with a relaxing environmentally friendly outlook. The locals are friendly too, and they even have an official Wizard.

Transport Options

Christchurch International Airport is located about 10km northwest from downtown. Taxi's and Shuttle Buses operate as well as regular bus services. All major rental car companies are represented. Taxi fare approx $15-20, Bus fare approx $2.50

The Railway Station is off Whiteleigh Ave in Addington and a bit difficult to get to except by car or taxi. Trains go north, south and west - but check with Tranz Rail as things do change and get dumped with todays cost cutting. There is no surburban rail system (except to the port of Lyttleton) as Christchurch is too flat and bicycles are available.

Scheduled suburban buses operate all over Christchurch if the bicycle proves too much to handle.

If you would like to be a bit more exotic, an old tramway system has been restored in the central city and covers many places of interest. It's worth just taking a ride!

Mt Cook

Nothing you can say here really about Mt Cook. You just gotta go and witness some of the most beautiful scenery on earth. No point trying to explain it in words. Check out my photos section for lots of images of the region.

Great place to be anytime of the year. Just make sure you bring plenty of rain gear. Seasons can change by the hour!
