As one writer put it “it might seem nature fashioned this place for greatness”. Known from ancient times as one of Ireland’s several ”Hill of the Fairies” this is probably an indication of it’s importance to the ancient peoples who dotted the land with ring forts. Later the Rock became “Cashel of the Kings”, Corc, Nafrioch and Aengus who ruled in turn over lesser kings before becoming subject to a higher ruler. It was in the middle years of the 5th century that Patrick the missionary came to these rich lands to be led up the Rock at the hand of the young King Aengus. At the other great centre of Irish royalty - The Hill of Tara, Patrick was received with tolerance but at Cashel, the young king knelt to Patrick and whilst Tara is now only of archaeological interest, Cashel is still a centre of pilgramage. In 1101AD King Murtagh O’Brien granted the rock to the church who grafted additional buildings within the enclosing walls. The buildings on the Rock now include a 10th century Round Tower, Cormac’s Chapel, the Cathedral, The Hall of the Vicars Choral and St. Patricks’s Cross.
