Named from the Irish "Gleann Dá Loch" meaning the Valley of the Two Lakes  the area was chosen by St. Kevin to found his 6th. century monastic city. An area of extraordinary beauty the rich, well drained soils could be easily cultivated and the monastery grew over the centuries. Most of the ruins date fom the 10th. - 12th. centuries. The Tapestries feature the round tower used by monks as a place of refuge. The large picture also shows the ruin known as St Kevin's Kitchen and in the foreground - the Glendalough River.
