The constuction of the monument at Newgrange about 3000BC
makes it one of the oldest man made structures. For the Neolithic farmers who built it,
the monument was just part of a whole area of elaborate cultural development which is
still only being pieced together and understood today.
Newgrange is the largest and is particularly
noted for the shaft of sunlight which pentrates down the passageway to the chamber at the
heart of the stucture at the winter solstice - testament to the astronomical
knowledge and interest of the ancients.
Although the monument is quite small in this
tapestry, it is seen atop it's hill that lies in a broad bend of the River Boyne. It is
thus seen in the context of this magnificent, fertile valley so important to early man.
