Banagher on the Shannon

                                                         

Located on the Shannon crossing, Banagher town was originally a small port in the 18th century, and is now a major centre for Boating activities as well as Fishing and Watersports

 

Situated in the County of Offaly, Banagher attracts thousands of visitors each year and this town welcomes visitors. Banagher is an ideal base for touring Ireland.
It was once home to such literary greats as Anthony Trollope and Charlotte Bronte and also William Wilde the father of Oscar Wilde.
The Wide Bridge that crosses the River Shannon at Banagher and opens the way to tour the West of Ireland.
As far as entertainment goes, Banagher has a wonderful array of both restaurants and pubs. You can enjoy a quiet drink or follow the sound of singing and traditional music which can be heard on the street to a lively music sessions which can last into the small hours especially during the long summer evenings.







 

A great place to stop off for an evening meal or to meet a few locals

A pleasant stroll may be had by negotiating the stile on the town side of the Martello Tower, and following the old haywain road through the callows. In summer one is enchanted here by the scented meadow breeze, or the lofty warbling of skylarks; but in winter all about us is covered by water. 

On a warm night listen to the distinctive sound of the corncrake on Banagher Bridge or go on a Corncrake Evening organized by Birdwatch Ireland during the summer.
Don't forget to bring your golf clubs or your fishing rods, for there are plenty of opportunities for both

The marina offers superb facilities for all who stay here.
The Banagher Coarse Angling Festival and the Portumna Classic match competitions are held every year at a number of venues in the area, usually in April/May and again in September/October.
