Knocksink Wood, Enniskerry
Co. Wicklow

2nd Year Woodwork Field Trip to
KNOCKSINK WOOD
8th February 1999 accompanied by Ms Ní Chuirrrín and Mr Lyons
Knocksink Wood is situated in Co.
Wicklow. It is a nature reserve open to the public and operated by the Office of
Public Works. There is an visitors centre which hosts exhibitions and provides
information talks - displays relating to the historical development of the forest, its
biological makeup, wildlife and flora.
Fortunately! when we arrived the forest was covered in a carpet of snow.
Delighted and excited students made use of their stored up energy, 15 minutes of snowball
fights ensued. The centre staff then welcomed us warmly and we viewed an exhibition
of woodturning (were these craft items turned by Mr Byrne and Mr Cribbin??) with a brief
stimulating talk on the subject.
After lunch we were taken on a forest trail. Our trail leader discussed wildlife,
flora and other activities in the woods and surrounding area. The students took part
in organised forestry games which were both educational and great fun.
A final game which the students designed themselves was played. It was a combination
of football, snowball fights and wrestling, tremendous fun was had by all.
Dragging heels and incessant pleas for a return visit echoing through the forest, we made
our way to the bus. WET and COLD we left Knocksink Wood and headed home vowing to
return.
A great day had by all!
Our thanks to Gearóid and his Garda
Community Bus for getting us there and back in comfort and safety
