To find out if peat is acidic ( to measure ph).

What you need:       jam jar

                            distilled water

                            universal indicator

What to do:

  1. Place a small amount of peat in the jam jar.
  2. Fill the jar with distilled water and shake.
  3. Add a few drops of universal indicator.
  4. Filter the mixture through a piece of gauze into a bowl.
  5. Compare its colour with the ph colour chart.
  6. Record ph, if ph is :      <7 - acid                                  =7 -neutral                             >7=base
