To find the different particles in a sample of soil from a bog.

The experiment shows us the different particles in a sample of peat.  You should be able to see decaying cell of plants and animals floating on top this is known as Humus.

What you need:    jam jar with lid

                            water

                             sample of soil from a bog

  1. Quarter fill the jam jar with peat.
  2. Fill with water.
  3. Shake it for a few minutes and then observe as the soil settles, the heaviest particles will sink quickly forming a layer at the bottom.
  4. In you copy draw a diagram of the jar and try to label the different layers
