THE
ESB IN KILLIMER: The 19th of October 1955 was a special day for the people of the Killimer parish. A whole new world was opened to them when the incumbent parish curate Reverend Patrick Lynch set matters in motion by officially switching on the electricity . Before this date the local people boiled water in kettles on the hearth, cooked their food using ovens, read books and newspap~rs by candlelight and lamp and ironed their clothes by means of heavy irons. However, when Reverend Lynch turned on the switch a different and exciting new world began for the parishioners. They now possessed vast opportunities whereby they could carry out many tasks such as ironing clothes, cooking food, running hot water and read at night by means of artificial light generated by electricity .These possibilities were available at the flick of a switch. This scenario is of particular interest considering that one of the Irish Republic's largest electricity-generating power stations was constructed and officially opened at Moneypoint in 1980.
