The
First Post Office to be opened in the parish was in the year 1815 at Knock.
This was for the delivery of mail only. In 1833 there was a memorial for
direct post between Knock and Kildysart and in 1840 free delivery, of mail
commenced in Knock. The 'Penny Post' system was in operation at Knock up to
the 1850' s. The first appointed postmaster in 1819 was Aley Lockhart.
Subsequent Postmasters/Postmistresses were John Torpey (1856-1861) Patrick Torpey (1862-1870) Marie Culligan (1886-1893) Samuel Peacock (1893-1902) Mary Finucane (1902-1908) Michael Twomey (1908-1953) Brendan Twomey (1953-1988) Knock Post Office was officially closed on the 12th of October, 1988. Postmen to Knock Post Office in the twentieth century were:
Michael Lynch, Thomas Mahony,
Patrick Burke, James Meehan, John Cullinan, John Lynch, John Hickey. John
Lynch retired as postman in 1982. He had worked as a postman for 52 years;
having started in 1930. He travelled an average of twenty miles per day.
