Church at Newtown

Chapel at Newtown

The fine old Medieval Church of All Saints at Newtown, dating from about the 13th Century, was closed and abandoned at the time of the Reformation. Afterwards Mass was offered on days of obligation in the old ruined Castle of Newtown. However 20 years before Catholic emancipation the present Church was built at Newtown. This was in 1808 or 1809 - an early time for a fine new Church. It was dedicated to All Saints and was the first post Penal Church in the Parish of Callan. It was built by the Parish Priest of Callan Rev. Fr. Forristal.
