Church of the Assumption
The building of the present Parish church in Callan, dedicated to Our Lady Assumed into Heaven, was commenced in 1816. The Parish Priest was Rev. Michael Forristal. He died in 1820 but construction of the Church continued under his successors - Rev Fr. Hennebery and Rev. Fr. Mullins.
The Church is in the Neo-Classical style showing on the outside front an impressive porch over which is a fine pediment. on this rests a bell tower and graceful spire. All rest on two cut stone round pillars in the ancient Doric style and on two cut stone square pillars one on either side of the doric pillars.
A wall plaque on the porch reads:
The interior also preserves the neo-classical lines. This is particularly evident in the ten double pillars, all fluted and mounted in the ancient Corinthian style, which adorn the altar area as a Reredos to the high altar and as surrounds to the two side altars of the Sacred Heart and Our Lady.
The church building is unusual in that it has living accommodation incorporated into the structure.
