Since 1952, Clogher Historical Society has been exploring all aspects of the social, religious and economic history of a region which transcends political and denominational boundaries. Encompassing all of county Monaghan, most of Fermanagh, a large part of Tyrone and small portions of both Louth and Donegal and drawing its membership from all religious traditions, the Society is the largest of its kind in Ireland, with more than 800 members.
For just £12 a year (£15 for libraries), members receive a copy of our annual journal and are invited to attend a programme of activities, including lectures, tours, and an annual dinner. If you are interested in joining our Society, please write to

The following index links to the Clogher Record are in three parts. The first is a complete list of contents of all issues from the beginning arranged according to volumes. Second is an index by author and third an index by subject.
This index is based, in part, on earlier and more recent indexing work undertaken by Olive Byrne, Most Rev. Dr Joseph Duffy, Theo McMahon and Donald Schlegel. This updated and expanded guide has been prepared by Mr Brian MacDonald and members of the Clogher Historical Society Millennium Project.
Enquiries are often received regarding two issues of a journal titled 'Clogher Record' which issued in 1949 and 1950. The first of these is titled Clogher Record: The History of St. Macartan's Cathedral and its Patron Saint (Galway, 1949) and the other Clogher Record: Heber McMahon Ter-Centenary Number (Galway, 1950). These were diocesan publications and issued prior to the establishment of the Clogher Historical Society in 1952 and the first issue of the Society's journal the Clogher Record in 1953. The contents of these two commemorative issues are listed in Clogher Record Album (Monaghan, 1975), 295.
The editors of the journal since 1953 have been:
Rev. Patrick Mulligan (1953-59)
Rev. P. Ó Gallachair (1960-63)
Rev. Joseph Duffy (1964-1975)
Theo McMahon (1976-1999)
They will shortly be available in a published format.
The New Millennium Project, established by the Clogher Historical Society with funding from the EU Special Support Programme for Peace & Reconciliation, has been up and running since September 1997. It is a unique project in that it has emerged from a local society which identified the potential of professionally-researched history as a means of building bridges within and between divided communities. The project has a specific
remit to research and bring into the public domain aspects of the history of Clogher Diocese in the seventeenth,
eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Beyond this, the objective is to make the fruits of this research accessible
to local history groups and to individual researchers, whether through publications, lectures, media publicity or
whatever.
The project is administered from an office in St. Macartan's College, Monaghan, and can be contacted at
Email: chs@tinet.ie . In addition to a director based in Monaghan, two full-time archival researchers are
employed, one based in Belfast, the other in Dublin. Beyond ongoing research activities, the New
Millennium Project aims to encourage post-graduate research on topics related to this diocese.
Through its New Millennium Project, Clogher Historical Society has joined with the Presbyterian
community in mid-Monaghan in efforts to refurbish a disused church at Cahans. For details of this
project see
