Máire Brennan at Sopot Music Festival in Poland

Thanks to Moya in Poland for telling us that it was announced on Polish TV that Máire Brennan, not Clannad, will appear in concert at this year's Sopot Music Festival in Poland on August 18th. We had earlier reported that Clannad as a group might appear at Sopot, but this does not seem to be the case. Moya said no further details were announced. Also, the complete schedule of artists who will appear at the Sopot Music Festival this year has not been finalized and published. If anyone has further details, please let us know at our email address clannad.news@ireland.com.

    Clannad Concert This August?

We have received a message from a reader of the news page that there is a possibility that Clannad as a group will be playing at the annual Sopot Music Festival in Poland on August 18th. So far, this has been unconfirmed, but the Sopot Music Festival seems a likely venue for the band to play since such groups as Altan have played at the Festival. If anybody knows any more information on this, please let us know at our email address clannad.news@ireland.com. Is this going to be a one off event, or will Clannad continue on with further shows in Europe? Nothing is known at this moment.

    Interview with Máire Brennan

There is a fairly long interview with Máire Brennan available on-line from the U.K. Christian web site Tollbooth.org. The interview was done back in November 1999 following a Máire Brennan concert at the Knock Presbyterian Church in Belfast, Northern Ireland. It seems parts of this interview had already been published elsewhere, but this seems to be the complete interview.

Review of Máire Brennan "Whisper To The Wild Water"

The on-line edition of the UCLA paper, The Daily Bruin, has a short review of Máire Brennan's "Whisper To The Wild Water" album available from their on-line archives. The review by Cyrus McNally, done in January this year, is critical of the album, but not of Máire Brennan's voice.

    Web Site Notes

This past week we moved the main page for The Unofficial Clannad News Page to servers on Eircom.net which have been serving reliably as a mirror for the past several months. The new URL in case you have not bookmarked it already is http://homepage.eircom.net/~clannad/index.html. The reason for this move is due to technical problems with FTP access to our original web site at Acmecity.com. The Acmecity web site will no longer be used and all traffic will be redirected to the Eircom.net page.

A new live RealAudio link has been added to our Internet Audio Recommendations list on the right grey bar of this page. It is a new 24 hour live stream of the Irish language radio national network in Ireland - Raidió Na Gaeltachta. Raidió Na Gaeltachta not only serves as the premiere Irish language radio network, but also features Gaelic songs and music programs throughout the day, including many songs by Clannad. You will need the RealAudio 3.0 player or higher to listen to this live stream.

Noel and Padraig Duggan Play Live on TG4 TV Show "Síbín" in Galway

A news item in the latest news section of the official web site for the group Altan talks about a recent airing of the TV show "Síbín" on TG4 (the Irish language national TV network in Ireland) in which Noel and Padraig Duggan played live with a number of other musicians. The live TV show, shown on April 27th, had a distinctly Gaoth Dobhair flavor with Francie Mooney (Proinnsias O Mhaonaigh), Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh's father from the group Altan, featured on the show playing with the group and a number of other musicians from the area and friends from the regular music session held in Tigh Hiudai Beags in Bunbeg, Co. Donegal. Noel and Padraig Duggan, from Clannad, were joined by their friend Thomas Loeftke (Norland Wind) who plays the harp and they spoke about their early days on stage. The TV show "Síbín" features live music weekly every Sunday night on TG4 from their studios in Galway.

If anybody taped this show, please let us know by email at clannad.news@ireland.com.

Pictures From the 30th Anniversary of Leo's Tavern

Some older news from back in 1998. Thanks to Alan (living in the U.S. but part-time resident in Donegal) for putting up pictures of the 30th Anniversary Celebration of Leo's Tavern held in Meenaleck, Co. Donegal in July 19, 1998. The pictures show Leo Brennan specially dressed up for the occasion. Also shown are Máire Brennan who played a special performance joined by her sisters Dee and Bridín. Pól Brennan, formerly of Clannad, also joined in the festivities with Leo Brennan leading the celebrations throughout the night. Leo's Tavern is located in Meenaleck, Co. Donegal and is the place where the group Clannad started. Leo Brennan can be seen regularly there with a sing along performance nightly. Bartley Brennan, Leo's youngest son, is now owner and manager of the pub established by Leo in 1968. (Thanks again to Alan for the link)
