Clontubrid School

When Clontubrid School opened in 1932 it was as a direct replacement for Balleen School. Local people have told us that some of the stone for the new Clontubrid School came from the demolished Clone School.

The two teachers from Balleen School, Mrs. Hannah Maher (Principal) and Miss Katie Dunne (later Mrs. Katie Holland) were the first teachers in the new school. Hannah Maher died in 1938 and was replaced by Mr. Tom Waldron. Mr. Waldron later moved to Freshford School and went on to become President of the INTO. He was replaced as Principal by Mr. Malacy Sullivan and he was succeeded, in 1959, by Mr. Pat Doheny.

Pat and his wife, Kitty served as teachers at the school until Kitty's retirement in 1984, and Pat's death the following year. Kitty was succeeded by the present teacher, Mary Maher and Pat was succeeded by Tommy Maher.

Major renovation work on the school was completed in 2000 and the school was renamed - in honour of the local patron saint, Saint Fiachra - in May 2002.
