Youth Provision in Cork City and County

2.1 Introduction

The following is a list of youth activities in Cork City and County areas. The organisations listed are confined to those represented on the CLVYC, with the exception of Kerry Youth Service which has provision in the West Cork area.

The location of each activity is indicated, the age group and sex of the target group of young people as well as the organisation involved in the provision is given.

The Scout Association of Ireland (S.A.I.) and the Catholic Boy Scouts of Ireland (C.B.S.I.) have an inclusive policy (i.e. open to male and female membership). This is operational in all areas for the S.A.I. and is some areas for the C.B.S.I. This should be considered when reading the list.

This is not necessarily a definitive list, mainly because of the dynamic native of youth work activity. This was the picture that emerged in the beginning of 1995 when this study was undertaken.

Furthermore while it might appear that there are areas which are very well provided with activities, this in fact may not be the case. Table 1 which focuses on the areas of Ballincollig, Carrigaline and Douglas illustrates this point very clearly.

Finally the maps provide a visual presentation of the spread of youth provision in Cork City and County.

The following table focuses on the areas of Ballincollig, Douglas and Carrigaline because they are characterised by large youth populations.

While the number of voluntary organisations involved in these areas, as listed above, might suggest that these areas are well provided with activities for their young people, this in fact may not be the case. In practice, the current provision could not possibly be meeting the needs of all young people in these areas because there is such a large population of young people between the ages of 4 and 18 residing in Ballincollig, Carrigaline and Douglas. This could also be true of some other areas located both inside and outside the city boundaries.
