The Deep-Water Quay

The deep-water quay on a Summer's evening

Background

Cobh is a town in the southern Republic of Ireland, in county Cork, a seaport on the southern shore of Great Island, on Cork Harbour near Youghal. It is a leading Irish port of call for transatlantic ships. It was named Queenstown until 1922, when Ireland became free of British rule. Population (1991) 6227.Cobh Harbour is the Second largest natural made harbour in the world. It was the last stop for The Titanic on her maiden voyage before she sank. The Titanic anchored off Cobh. Passengers boared the tender at the White Star Line pier. The tender then brought the passengers out to the Titanic which was in deeper water. This pier is still visible today, it is situated out the back of the titanic bar. During the famine many peolple flocked to Cobh from all over Ireland to leave for America on the "coffin ships".There is a statue in memory of Annie Moore who was one of the first to leave from Cobh for america. This statue is situated just before the Deep - Water Quay
