History:
From 1866 to 1920, our Scout Hall was the Queenstown RNLI (Royal National Lifeboat Institution) lifeboat station. The station was established by the institution in 1866 as several wrecks with loss of life had occurred in the vicinity of Cork Harbour. The 34-ft 10-oared Lifeboat "Quiver No.2",designed to right itself if over-turned, was publically named and launced on the 22nd of October 1866.

From the 1950's to the 1970's the premises was used as the "Clayton Love Lobster Pools" for the Trans-Atlantic Liner Trade at that Period.
Between 1984 and 1987, it was used by a Local Cork Harbour Pilot, Michael Coleman to build his 45ft Steel-hulled cruise yacht, "Stella Maris", which has sailed to many destinations such as Iceland and USSR.

In 1987, Cobh Sea Scouts were fortunate enough to have a good Parents & Friends Committee who succeeded in purchasing this ideal location for the premises of the Sea Scout Troop. The old corrugated roofing was replaced by reinforced concrete beams which would later support the upper level(s).

For 10 years the Hall remained like this until the cash flow was, well, flowing, and the bank repayments were low enough to take out another loan to finish the building. In 1997, work began on the upstairs section of the hall. Upstairs is now the meeting place of all 4 sections of the troop (Beavers, Cubs, Scouts & Ventures) and downstairs is kept as a boathouse used mainly by the Scout Section.

Below is a photo taken in December 2005 showing the recent landscaping and access routes to the boathouse and beach. The tarmac ramps mean that the upper hall is now wheelchair accessible.
The Upper Hall is divided up into a main meeting area, a galley (kitchen to all you land-lubbers), male/female toilet facilities, and a storage loft area. Galley includes Electric Cooker/Oven, Refrigerator, Hot & Cold Water (Immersion Heater).

Below is a rough chart of Cork Harbour showing the geographical location of our Scout Hall, along with some of the places we sail to during the summer months such as: White Bay, Foxes Cover, Aghada, East Ferry ("Dirty Murph's"), Ringabella, Currabinny, Crosshaven, etc.

Roches Point Lighthouse identifies the mouth of the Harbour, while warning of the "Cow & Calf" rocks, upon which many ships have run aground. Two channels either side of the Harbour Rock are used by Ships as large as the QE2 to Berth within the sheltered confines of Cork Harbour, one of the largest natural harbours in the world.
As a point of interest, Cobh (or "Queenstown" as it was then known), was the last port of call of the "Titanic" before setting sail across the Atlantic, and was the last town many of the ill-fated passengers set eyes upon, before the ship struck an iceberg and sank.
Many of the casualties from the "Lusitania" were also brought ashore at Cobh after she was sunk by a German U-Boat.
