Crab Lane Get Off To A Flier At Blackrock

Baile An Teampaill 3-11 : Baile Féith Sheáin 1-2

Crab Lane Girls made a perfect start to their 2001 Sciath na Scol campaign today when they strolled to a well deserved victory over Ballyphehane GNS. Displaying impressive determination from the outset, the girls immediately got into their stride with a series of well-taken scores. Becky West, Christine Golden and Orla O' Reilly made the most of the excellent supply of ball from a dominant "lár na páirce" pairing of Stacey Paul and Jessica O' Leary, to establish a dominant lead over their city rivals. Tight marking and an extremely alert defence, ably marshalled by Sinéad O' Reilly ensured that any forays into the Crab Lane lines were few and far between. Rookie cosantóirí Natalie Barnes, Kate O' Dowling and Aisling Murphy all made impressive debuts in what was an excellent team performance. Indeed the Crab Lane keepers (Rebecca Sullivan and Anna Moloney) scarcely had any saves to make in the game, such was the stranglehold established by defenders such as Eva Harvey and the Oliver twins. Some of our veteran performers were called ashore in the second half, in order to "blood" squad members and Louise Archer in particular was not slow to stake a claim for a starting berth in our next match. Parents, supporters and coaching staff expressed themselves well-pleased with the girls efforts, but all agreed that much stiffer challenges lie ahead. Our opposition in this group include last years Sciath na Scol winners.Watch this space to see how we fare!

Report On Our First Match - Tuesday September 18th
Our 2001 Sciath na Scol campaign got underway on September 18th, with both our Boys and Girls teams playing challenge games against Gaelscoil Mhachan. While Crab Lane managed to win both games, the performance rather than the result was the main concern. Veterans of previous campaigns such as the O' Reilly sisters and Stacey Paul figured prominently for foireann na gcailíní while the likes of Roy Power and Sam Mc Namee showed enough to convince us that they continue to have a great appetite for the battles ahead.

New faces are also beginning to emerge on both teams and this is an extremely heartening development for the coaching staff! Louise Archer, Natalie Barnes, Eva Harvey and the Oliver sisters amongst others, suggest that the present generation could figure prominently in this years Sciath na Scol. Our Boys are hoping to go one better than last years final appearance and recent impressive additions to the squad such as Ian Ring, Joe Holland (free transfer from Cork Con!), and Michael O' Keeffe ("The Artful Dodger") could yet strenghthen the team further. The competition begins in earnest on Thursday next, September 20th, when the cailíní host Ballyphehane at Blackrock and the buachaillí travel to New Inn to play Lower Glanmire. (To be confirmed) Why not lend your support to our teams by e-mailing a message of good luck!

New Kids On The Block!!

We extend a "céad míle fáilte" to the newest arrivals to Crab Lane N.S. 18 bright-eyed and bushy-tailed scholars arrived at Miss Long's doorstep on Monday September 3rd, to begin what we hope will be a happy and rewarding 8 years with us. All seemed very happy and contented with their lot and were only too pleased to pose for a first-day photo! We wish them well and look forward to getting to know the next generation of "Crab Lane Kids"!

Athletics News/Lúthcleasaíocht

Pride of place must go to our running teams who again performed with great distinction at the Cork Primary School Sports. The sports were held in Páirc Uí Chaoimh on June 16th and saw both our Boys and Girls teams win their respective groups outright. The boys team were first to go in the morning competition and easily won their group with four first place finishes out of seven races. Our winners included Kevin Ring, Dylan West, Darragh Dunne and Joe Holland. The U-11 Relay competition was next on the agenda. This event has proved to be a happy hunting ground for our relay teams in the past and our team of Joe Holland, James Sullivan, Michael O' Keeffe and Darragh Dunne made no mistake in running a highly impressive race, to take first place. Not to be out-done, our senior relay team of Niall Courtney, Roy Power, Caoimh O'Reilly-Mulvany and Sam McNamee ensured a clean sweep for Crab Lane by demolishing the field in their race. 3 very impressive looking cups were claimed by the boys who expressed themselves well pleased with their mornings work!Cómhgháirdeas a bhuachaillí, rinne sibh gaisce!

Our victorious Boys Squad who won Overall, Junior and Senior Relay Cups.

The healthy rivalry that exists between the boys and girls teams meant that news of the boys success wasn't long reaching the gals! Unfazed and undeterred (at least outwardly!) the girls marched on Páirc Uí Chaoimh and in a spectacular display of athleticism also claimed the overall cup in their division, just as the boys had done earlier.Winners included Mary-Claire Harvey, Emma Oliver and Sinéad O' Reilly. "Pressure-what pressure?", we heard them say, as their relay teams set about matching the boys success.
The U-11 relay team of 2001 was this year made up of a unique "double twins" formation. The "gruesome twosome" of Orla and Sinéad O' Reilly ran legs 1 and 4 of the relay while the terrible twins of the Oliver household (Lauren & Emma) ran legs 2 and three. The opposition was again left floundering as the O' Reilly/Oliver partnership ran 4 devastating legs to literally run away with the event.. The girls were now only one race victory away from equalling the boys success. Their Senior Relay combination of Stacey Paul, Celia Johnson, Emma Buckley and Becky West were dealt a cruel hand however when Stacey was obstructed in her leg and the win that they had worked so hard for eluded them on this occasion. A haul of five cups was testimony to a memorable day in Páirc Uí Chaoimh for runners and supporters alike however.
A special "míle buíochas" must go to our trusty and very vocal band of supporters, made up of parents, pupils and teachers, who cheered our runners on all day.Our thanks also to the Coiste of the Primary School Sports, whose trojan work every year ensures that the biggest race meeting in Europe goes off without a hitch. 5,500 children ran at this years sports.

Swimming/Snámhaíocht

Our annual "Swimmathon" was again held recently at the Lavanagh Centre and pupils from Rang 2-6 enthusiastically took to the task completeing a set number of lengths of the pool. They completed the event under the watchful eyes of Mrs. Stubbs and their respective class teachers. Funds raised at the "Swimmathon" are used to upgrade our stock of library books. We thank the children, and Mrs. Stubbs for their efforts and all those who contributed so generously. Those who have raised money but not yet handed it in, can do so in September.
A Primary Schools Gala was also held in the Churchfield Pool recently and a number of Crab Lane students took part. Darragh Dunne , Jack Daly, Alin Hughes and Rory Daly were among the prize-winners, at what turned out to be a most enjoyable gala. A special word of thanks to our swimming coach, Mrs. Angela Stubbs, who has been teaching swimming to middle standard pupils for a number of years, with great success.

Haute-Cuisine!

A most appetising aroma wafted through the corridors of our beloved school recently. Investigators were dispatched from many quarters and the source of these wonderful smells was found to be Miss Sayers' room. Reports indicated that her pupils were seen preparing what could only be described as a veritable feast of gastronomic delights! All sorts of delicious cakes and desserts have been created in this culinary centre of excellence during the past year. Indeed, such was the pride being taken in the work of our young chefs, that it proved extremely difficult to even get a sample!

Tours/Turasanna

The month of June saw groups of children setting off in all directions on their eagerly awaited school tours. This years destinations included Tralee, Limerick and Fota. Rang 5/6 got a glimpse of the ill-fated "Jeannie Johnson" en route to Fenit Sea-World where they discovered some of the wonders of the deep. From there they travelled to Tralee and to a time when the Geraldines ruled that town. The Kerry County Museum was the venue for this journey back in time and provided us with a most enjoyable look at our history. No trip to the "Kingdom" is complete without a splash in the Aqua-Dome and this rounded off a most rewarding day for all.

Rang 3/4 had an early start for their all-action day at the University Of Limerick sports campus. During the course of the day they partook of a wide variety of pursuits including swimming, rafting, canoeing, archery, and even an assault course! The tired and weary limbs evident on the return journey told their own story!

Junior Tour!

Looks like David's King of the Castle!
All aboard the Gravy Train at Fota!
Junior & Senior infants had a great day out at Fota Wildlife Park this year. The weather was again kind to us and the word from Fota was that the animals were eagerly looking forward to a visit from the Crab Lane Kids! Monkeys, cheetahs, giraffes and all manner of strange creatures turned up on the day to say "hi" to the children, who were ferried around the park by the "Bisto Kid".

Iomáint

A "friendly" hurling match took place between Crab Lane and St. Anthony's B.N.S. recently. Crab Lane will be fielding a team in the Sciath na Scol Hurling Competition next year and it was with a view to this that the match took place. St. Anthony's emerged victorious but our lads can be pleased with quite an accomplished performance against a hurling power of this calibre.Daniel O' Driscoll will have special reason to remember the wonderful point he scored from deep in his own half.

Drámaíocht

Mrs. Kiely's class entertained their fellow students with a number of sketches from "Cinderella".Bhain gach duine sult agus sásamh as an léiriú agus bhí árd-caighdeán an ghaeilge-labhartha agus an drámaíocht ar-fheabhas. Tugadh aitheantas speisialta do Ellen O' Keffe agus do Richard Condon as ucht a scileana drámaíochta.

Feisteas Scoile Nua

The school took delivery of a brand new sports-kit recently and some of our team members agreed to model same! The kit sports the traditional school colours of green and yellow and will hopefully inspire our young guns to great things on the field of play!
