Returning to
Tarbert in 1968 Dan opened up several hotels in the South West
area and was the trainer of the Kerry Minor GAA team from
1970-1972. Eleven members of this team went on to play for the
legendary Kerry Senior team of the 1970's and early 1980's
including Paudie O'Shea the current trainer.
He became Chairman of his local Fianna Fail Cumann in Tarbert in
1972 and thus commenced his active career in local and National
politics. A member of Kerry County Council since 1979 Dan Kiely
was elected as a Senator in 1981-1982 and since 1987.
He has stood for the Dail on three occasions when his transfers
have proved vital in securing Fianna Fail seats in Kerry North.
A member of the Joint Committee on
Environment and Local Government Dan is the Fianna Fail
spokesman on the Environment and also European Affairs in the Seanad. He has also served
as Secretary of Tarbert Development Association
1979-1981,Chairman of General Council of County Councils
1985-1987. He was Chairman of the North Kerry Gaelic Athletic
Association 1968-1973 and has been Chairman of the Fianna Fáil
Immigration Committee since 1988.
Senator Dan Kiely M.C.C was
nominated as one of 2 Fianna Fáil candidates on the 23 July 2001
at a convention at The Mount Brandon Hotel, Tralee, Co. Kerry.
He was selected to represent Kerry North as a candidate in the
next general election.
Dan has one son and three daughters
