SENATOR DAN KIELY FACT FILE


Senator Dan Kiely was born in Tarbert Co. Kerry in May 1943. One of 17 children Dan's father Daniel fought in the War of Independence and the Civil War and was a member of Sean Moylan's flying column in Co. Cork. Dan senior was a Broy Harrier and later a Garda and appointed by Eamon de Valera's as a personal bodyguard until he retired in 1939. His mother Hannagh came from West Cork.


Like many others Dan was forced to emigrate to New York in 1960. He got a job with the famous investment bankers Goldman Sachs in Wall Street and was one of the first people from Kerry to work on IBM processors that were the forerunners of the modern computer. While in Goldman Sachs Dan worked weekends in Gaelic Park where he indulged his great love for Gaelic football. Using his business acumen Dan opened up five bars in the 'big apple' which catered for the huge young Irish population in the city.

Returning to Tarbert in 1968 Dan opened up several hotels in the South West area and was the trainer of the Kerry Minor GAA team from 1970-1972. Eleven members of this team went on to play for the legendary Kerry Senior team of the 1970's and early 1980's including Paudie O'Shea the current trainer.
He became Chairman of his local Fianna Fail Cumann in Tarbert in 1972 and thus commenced his active career in local and National politics. A member of Kerry County Council since 1979 Dan Kiely was elected as a Senator in 1981-1982 and since 1987.
 

He has stood for the Dail on three occasions when his transfers have proved vital in securing Fianna Fail seats in Kerry North.

A member of the Joint Committee on Environment and Local Government Dan is the Fianna Fail spokesman on the Environment and also European Affairs in the Seanad. He has also served as Secretary of Tarbert Development Association 1979-1981,Chairman of General Council of County Councils 1985-1987. He was Chairman of the North Kerry Gaelic Athletic Association 1968-1973 and has been Chairman of the Fianna Fáil Immigration Committee since 1988.

Senator Dan Kiely M.C.C was nominated as one of 2 Fianna Fáil candidates on the 23 July 2001 at a convention at The Mount Brandon Hotel, Tralee, Co. Kerry. He was selected to represent Kerry North as a candidate in the next general election.
Dan has one son and three daughters
