Who are we?
Dublin Bay Watch LTD. is a voluntary action group set up "to protect and to preserve what remains of the amenities of Dublin Bay." We see Dublin Bay as a national resource to be enjoyed by the people of Dublin, the people of Ireland and, indeed, by overseas visitors to this area.
Why " Dublin Bay Watch" now?
The reason we came into being was because we know that Dublin Port Company have plans to infill 52 acres of Dublin Bay (Since 1960's hundreds of acres have been filled in.) We object to these plans as we fear that any further encroachment into the bay by Dublin Port Company will accelerate the silting up of the inter-tidal areas of Dublin Bay (North) and Tolka Estuary. We value this area greatly.
Dublin Port Company? Who are they?
Dublin Port Company is a commercial State company whose sole shareholder is the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources ( Mr. Frank Fahey, at present). Dublin Port Company ( DPC) were formerly known as the Dublin Port and Docks Board who, in 1988, sought a licence from the the then Minister of the Marine, Mr. Brendan Daly, to infill 52 acres of the bay, and who, in 1980 had been looking for 94 acres of the bay. Let's go back even further - to 1972. In that year the Dublin Port and Docks Board published Studies, as they called them, in which they revealed their long-terms plans for Dublin Bay. These Studies, if put into effect, would have dramatically reduced the foreshore of the bay from Clontarf (the Alfie Byrne Road, as we know it) to the Wooden Bridge, Dollymount. What would remain was just enough to allow the Tolka river flow to the sea. Everything else was to be infilled, thereby making space along the Clontarf Rd. for storage depot and light industry. These plans caused such a furore at the time that they were shelved, or should we say "put on the back burner" to be implemented piecemeal over the years???
