Oct 28 Div 5 Moyvane 1-08 Fossa 1-05

Fossa travelled to Moyvane on Sunday last for their final game
in this years county league. In a tight and exciting game Fossa went
down on a scoreline of 1-8 to 1-5. It was a disappointing result but
Fossa can have few complaints on the day. Fossa lost the toss and were playing against a stiff wind in the first half, some messy play and conceding a soft goal were the dissappointing feature of the first half.. Fossa went in at the break five down..

In the second half, Moyvane again took the initiative and pinned Fossa in thier own half for the first ten minutes.. BUT only scored a single point in this period, Fossa finally started to play some football and a great move saw Eoin O'Connell being fouled for a penaly.. BUT Jimmy Falvey blasted high and wide, minutes later Kenneth Clifford scored goal of the century with a pile driver from thirty meters after a great solo run.. Goal down minutes to go, clifford struck the post, and from the rebound Donald O'Sullivan floated a great ball across the square for Mikey Cronin to fist home.... BUT no avail ..The referee deemed it a square ball, The ref for his part was as poor as a ref could be... very hard to believe this man was given a Senior Championship final to ref... BUT Fossa cannot blame the ref on this occasion, quite simpily all the big players were well shackled on the day.. Fossa still lead the table by two points but have a game more played, They will have another chance as a three way play-off for the two promotion places is the most likely outcome..

Oct 09 - Novice Shield Semi-Final Fossa 2-14 Clonmacon 2-05

Fossa played Clounmacon in the Novice Shield semi-final on Sunday
afternoon last at Strand Road in Tralee. Fossa got off to a blistering
startn and were 1-5 to 0-0 up after 15 minutes, the goal coming in the
opening minute from a fast free from Jimmy Falvey. At the break Fossa
led on a scoreline of 1-8 to 1-1. It was Clounmacon who had the faster
start to the second half and closed the gap to 5 points 10 minutes in.
However Fossa regrouped and added some fine scores particularly from
Michael O' Neill. Fossa added a second goal after a fine move ended with
Kevin Myres calmly slotting home. Although not a great display, credit
has to go to Clounmacon as they never threw in the towel and their full
forward caused Fossa some problems. Fossa are now through to the final
where they will once again face Knocknagoshel. Final Score: Fossa 2-14
Clounmacon 2-5.

Gneeveguila B 0-09 Fossa 1-09 East Kerry Intermediate Championship "O'Sullivan Cup"

Fossa took on Gneeveguila “B” in round 1 of the O’ Sullivan Cup on Tuesday night last. Played in fine conditions in Gneeveguilla, it was the home side who raced into an early 0-3 to 0-0 lead with Fossa slow to get out of the blocks. However, after some fine interchange play between Kevin Myres and Mikey Cronin, big Mikey finished superbly to the net to level the scores. Fossa added the next two scores one from Conor O’ Keefe  and one from Cronin. However with the home sides forwards were still causing Fossa plenty of trouble at the back and added further scores with Fossa replying with a fine score from Eoin O’ Connell. At half time, Fossa trailed by a point on a scoreline of 0-7 to 1-3.  Some positional switches were made for the second half and indeed Fossa produced a much better display. However some wasteful shooting always kept the game in the balance, but points from Kevin Myres(4) and Tommy Cronin helped Fossa run out winners on a final score of 1-8 to 0-8. This wasn’t the best of displays by the Fossa lads but as they say a win is a win and Fossa will now go on to meet Kilcummin “B” in the quarter finals on Tuesday the 21st August at 7.30 p.m. in Fossa. On the night Fossa were well served by Peter O Brien in goal, Frank McCarthy and 3  O’ Sullivan brothers at the back, Conor O’ Keeffe at midfield while up front Mikey Cronin caused many problems with his height and Kevin Myres chipped in with some good scores.

Team: Peter O’ Brien, Shane Malone, Tommy Cronin(0-1), Kevin O’ Sullivan, Mark Dennehy, Frank McCarthy, Daniel O’ Sullivan, Fintan Coffey, Conor O’ Keeffe(0-1), Michael O’ Neill, Kenneth Clifford, Derry O’ Sullivan, Kevin Myres(0-4), Mikey Cronin (1-1), Eoin O’ Connell (0-1), Rob Foley

It was also great to see Shane Malone back from the States. Unfortunately Michael O’ Neill suffered a broken bone in his hand and we wish him all the best and hopefully a speedy recovery

County League - Round 7 - 29th June 2007

Fossa 2-17 Laune Ranger B 1-05

Fossa returned to the top of the table with an impressive victory over Laune Rangers in Fossa on Sunday afternoon last. The game was played in fine conditions and with the breeze in the first half, Fossa dominated possession with Conor O’ Keeffe and Mikey Cronin well on top in the middle.. The scores were also forthcoming with Donald Sullivan, Michael O’ Neill and Jimmy Falvey all in fine form. However it was the visitors who started the second half much brighter hitting four unanswered points. Then came the first goal of the game when Eoin O Connell got on the end of a fine move and expertly finished to the net. Fossa once again took control and added scores at will. Kevin Myres added the second goal. Fossa eventually ran out comfortable victors on a scoreline of 2-17 to 1-5. It would be unfair not to mention the backs on the day who limited the visitors to just one point from play. Mark Dennehy, Tommy Cronin and the outstanding Kevin Sullivan all had fine displays and were ably assisted by Frank Jnr., Dan Sullivan and Lorcan Daly.

Team: Colin Myres, Kevin O’ Sullivan, Tommy Cronin, Mark Dennehy, Frank McCarthy Jnr, Lorcan Daly, Dan O’ Sullivan, Mikey Cronin, Conor O Keeffe, Michael O’ Neill (0-3), Jimmy Falvey (0-3), Derry O’ Sullivan, Donald O Sullivan (0-10), Kenneth Clifford, Eoin O’ Connell (1-0), Kevin Myres (1-1), Johnny Falvey, Rob Foley, Michael O Connell.

County League - Round 6 and Novice Shield Q/Final- 14 July 2007

A game in which Fossa were never in danger.. a phyical bruising encounter devoid of good football.

East Kerry Div 1 Final ..................Sat 16th June 2007 in Fitzgerald Stadium

This win tonight proves that dreams do come through”; so proclaimed an overjoyed Fossa trainer, James O’Shea, after he had seen his side cause a major upset by defeating high flying Kilcummin to win the East Kerry senior league Division 1 title (Sponsored by Safeguard Security) at Fitzgerald Stadium on Saturday evening last.

Make no mistake about it, this was a win Fossa fully deserved; quite simply, they wanted this victory more than Kilcummin - a lot more. Trainer O’Shea, a man well known for wearing his heart on his sleeve, was in no doubt as to what this achievement meant to the Club; “Its nice to be able to compete with the big boys and win” he said. “It is great for everyone in the club and there will be one hell of a party. But in a way, tonight’s victory is a bonus for us; Our main aim is promotion from Division 4 and its back to training on Tuesday night” he continued.Kilcummin, who were very gracious in defeat after the game, could point to the fact that they were missing a number of regulars, including Michael McCarthy and U.S bound Brendan Keely, but on the plus side, Eamonn O’Donoghue was back after returning from his honeymoon and Fossa had to line out without their injured East Kerry player Fintan Coffey. On a night when everyone who pulled on the red and black shirt was a hero, it might seem unfair to single out any particular player for special mention, however there is no doubting that in Domhnall O’Sullivan Fossa had the man-of-the-match and without him they would not now be savouring the spoils of victory. O’Sullivan kicked 1-6 of his side’s total and everything he did on the night oozed with class.

Pre match favourites, Kilcummin, got off to the better start with two points from their chief talisman, D.J. Fleming, inside the opening five minutes of play, however they were rocked back on their heels a minute later when Lorcan Daly fed Eoin O' Connell and O’Connell’s high delivery into the square was met first time by Domhnall O’Sullivan to give the winners the boost of an early goal. Fleming again, and Padraig Kelly restored Kilcummin’s lead but Conor O’Keeffe, who had a fine first half, had the sides back on level terms at the end of the first quarter.Eoin O’Connell and Padraig Kelly swapped scores but points from Domhnall O’Sullivan and a fisted effort from Michéal Cronin had Fossa back in the lead with John Devane’s late point leaving just a point between the sides at the break, 1-4 to 0-6 in Fossa’s favour.Kilcummin resumed in determined fashion with D.J. Fleming levelling inside the first minute of the half and the same player gave his side the lead four minutes later. When Richie O’Connor doubled that advantage one feared that at last Kilcummin had found their form and that events would now unfold as per script. Fossa were having none of it however and the moving of Kenneth Clifford to full forward was to have a pronounced effect on the outcome. Clifford pointed well from the wing and though D.J. responded once again from a free, Clifford and Domhnall O’Sullivan followed up with two fine point to level the game once more.

O’Sullivan with a great point from the right wing, and D.J. Fleming swapped points at the three quarter stage but by now Kilcummin were again looking the more likely side to succeed, however some poor shooting was to cost them dearly and Fossa, knowing they had been left off the hook seized their opportunity. East Kerry player, Jimmy Falvey, was now contributing a lot more and a foul on him saw Domhnall O’Sullivan restore the winner’s lead from the resultant free with just six minutes remaining. With the winning post in sight Fossa were now playing like men possessed and Kenneth Clifford, had he passed to the unmarked Domhnall O’Sullivan, could have ensured victory three minutes later. All was not lost however as Clifford was subsequently fouled with O’Sullivan obliging to give Fossa a precarious two point lead. There was still five minutes, including added time, to go and Fossa hearts must have missed a few beats as Kilcummin threw everything into attack in an effort to save the day. Twice they were within inches of making the final telling pass on the edge of the square, however some dogged defending by the Fossa rearguard ensured a very first East Kerry League title for the youngest club in the Division.

Fossa chairman, Pat Sweeney, who has seen more downs that ups during the club’s thirty five year existence, was understandably in jubilant mood after the final whistle; “This is fabulous, it’s our first major trophy and playing the likes of Kilcummin is what football is all about. To a man our lads played with great heart and spirit, they never gave up and this is just the boost our club needed. Hopefully we can go on from here starting with promotion to Division 4” he exclaimed. Certainly no one could begrudge Fossa their hour in the sun. In their first year in Division 1 they took the league very seriously from the start and finished the campaign unbeaten and deserving winners of the Fleming Cup which was presented to joint winning captains, Colin Myers and Anthony Wharton, by the chairman of the East Kerry Board, Ger Galvin who himself of course is a Fossa native.

County League - Round 5 - 28th May 2007

Fossa 2-11 Ballylongford 0-02

Fossa produced an excellent display to beat Ballylongford at Fossa on Sunday evening last. Playing with the breeze in the opening half Fossa made the most of the elements racing in to a 1-7 to 0-0 lead, Donald Sullivan being the scorer in chief. Fossa, with Fintan Coffey and Conor O Keefe dominating the middle of the field, were guilty of wasting some opportunities and should have been further ahead at the break. Playing into the considerable breeze in the second half, Fossa picked up where they left off and produced an extremely efficient display. The backs, led by the excellent Kevin O’ Sullivan and Lorcan Daly, limited the Ballylongford boys to just 2 points and with the midfield duo again winning the possession Fossa added another 1-4 to their tally. The goal came as a result of a fine move and ended with Kenneth Clifford offloading to Mikey Cronin who finished superbly to the net. This was a fine display by the Fossa lads and maintains their unbeaten run in the county league. Fossa led at half time on a scoreline of 0-7 to 1-2 and ran out winners on a final scoreline of 0-12 to 1-5. This was an excellent all round team display and to the foremost on the day were Conor O’ Keefe in the middle of the park and Donald Sullivan up front who was well assisted by the Falvey brothers Jimmy and John. This was a historical win as it puts Fossa in the final for the first time in thier history.

County Novice Rd 1 Fossa 2-06 St. Senan's 3-10 Sun April 29

Fossa’s good run of late came to an abrupt end when they exited the novice championship in the opening round. Played in ideal conditions in Fossa, St. Senans started in whirlwind fashion and had hit the Fossa net twice in the opening ten minutes. Fossa were chasing the game from the and were 8 points down at the break. Fossa did gamely try to come back, and had the deficit down to three points with three minutes remaining after two goals from Kenneth Clifford, but that was as close as it got, and the visitors struck for another goal in the final minute. Although missing some key players on the day Fossa cannot complain about the result and the lads were soundly beaten by the better side. The most disappointing aspect of the result was the indiscipline showed by the team. Team: Colin Myres, Karl Foley, Lorcan Daly, Kevin O’ Sullivan, Mark Dennehy, Frank McCarthy, Daniel O’ Sullivan, Fintan Coffey (0-1), Conor O’ Keefe, Kenneth Clifford (2-0), Michael O’ Neill, Tommy Cronin (0-1), Eoin O’ Connell (0-1), Jimmy Falvey(0-2), Donald O’ Sullivan, Subs: Rob Foley, Mikey Cronin, Kevin Myres (0-1), Kevin McCarthy, Gerald Curran, John Falvey.

County League - Round 4 - 15th April 2007

Fossa 2-08 Listry 0-05

Fossa entertained neighbours Listry in a top of the table clash on Sunday afternoon last. Played in wonderful sunny weather it was Fossa who got off to the brighter start with points from Donald Sullivan and Jimmy Falvey. However, Listry started to take over in the middle of the field and hit for four points without reply. Fossa finished the half well hitting for 1-1 before the short whistle, the goal coming from Jimmy Falvey from the penalty spot. Half time: Fossa 1-3 Listry 0-4. Fossa started well in the second half and struck for their second goal after a fine move involving Jimmy Falvey and Fintan Coffey was finished off by Eoin O Connell. Listry fought hard but were unable to get the scores on the board due mainly to some fine performances by the Fossa backs. Fossa ran out winners on a scoreline of 2-8 to 0-5. On the day Fossa were well served at the back by Shane Malone, Frank McCarthy and Mark Dennehy, at midfield Fintan Coffey dominated in the second half and up front Jimmy Falvey was again in fine form and was ably assisted by Donal O’ Sullivan who got through an amount of work. Rob Foley, when introduced, was also outstanding. This was a good display by the Fossa lads and maintains their good run of late.

County League - Round 3 - 1st April 2007

St Senan 2-05 Fossa 2-13

Fossa maintained their unbeaten start to the county league with a good win away to St. Senans on Sunday morning last. Played in wonderful conditions in an immaculate pitch, Fossa played with the breeze in the opening half. Scores were proving somewhat difficult to come by in the opening 10 minutes with Fossa guilty of some wayward shooting but Jimmy Falvey(who finished with a personal tally of 1-8) kept things ticking over with some excellent free-taking. Fintan Coffey added an excellent score just before the break to see Fossa leading on a scoreline of 0-7 to 0-1. Fossa played wonderfully well in the second half and were rewarded by two goals. The first was a sweeping move ending with Derry Sullivan off-loading to Jimmy Falvey who made no mistake. Fossa’s second goal was another great effort from Dan Sulllivan after making a great break from the back. Fossa added more points, two coming from substitutes John Falvey and Rob Foley. St Senans to their credit never through in the towel and also struck for two good goals. This was an excellent all round display by the Fossa lads on the day and it would be impossible to single out any individuals after such a good team effort. Fossa got the only goal of the game after 20 minutes with a fine strike by Donald. A point from Sullivan along with two from Falvey and a fine point by Michael O Neill left Fossa ahead on a scoreline of 1-4 to 0-1 at the short whistle. The second half was tough going with Spa making the most of the breeze however our boys held out well to for a draw. This was a good performance in difficult conditions. At midfield Fossa tried hard against a formidable Spa pairing and up front Fossa were well served by the aforementioned Falvey and O' Sullivan, and also by Derry O Sullivan and Eoin O' Connell. However, it was a very determined Fossa side which resumed playing into the breeze and powered to victory aided by goals from Lorcan Daly and a fine effort by Donald O Sullivan. Fossa 3-09 Rathmore 2-10

In their first outing of the year Fossa faced Rathmore in the first round of the East Kerry Superleague in Fossa last Sunday morning. It was the visitors who started the stronger and were 1-1 to the good after 10 minutes. The home side responded strongly however and after a couple of fine scores from Jimmy Falvey and Donald Sullivan, Kevin Sullivan sneaked in for a super goal after 25 minutes. At the small whistle the scores were tied on a scoreline of 1-5 apiece. On the resumption it was the visitors who took the initiative and in the first 10 minutes of the second half Rathmore had surged 6 points clear. All credit to the Fossa lads though there was no give in and the excellent Michael O Neill and Jimmy Falvey ably assisted by Donald Sullivan kept the home side in touch. On the three quarter mark, after a great break from Derry O Sullivan and Lorcan Daly,  Fintan Coffey broke through to score a cracking goal. It was game on again. Subs Dan Sullivan and John Falvey did tremendous work to keep the game in the melting pot and another sub Ger Curran got on the end of a fine move to strike for a third goal in the final minutes. This was a fine all round team display and a wonderful victory. Colin Myres in goal was suberb and pulled off a couple fantastic saves just when it was needed, At the back captain Anthony Wharton lead his line and was suberbly assisted by the outstanding Karl Foley. The man must have intercepted the ball on countless occasions and his distribution is second to none. In the other corner, last years player of the year Shane Malone again displayed all his skills. On the half balk line Derry “the terrior” O Sullivan was immense and he was ably assisted by Lorcan Daly and the excellent Mark Dennehy. In midfield, after a quiet enough first half, Fintan Coffey showed just why he is a Kerry U21 with an outstanding second half display and 1-1 to his name. He was ably assisted by Tommy Cronin “ the old man of the team” and also by Kenneth Clifford. Up front, Kevin Sullivan, along with Michael O Neill led the line suberbly and inside Donald Sullivan, Jimmy Falvey (who was actually carrying flu into the game) and the excellent Kevin Myers were outstanding. Dan Sullivan, Ger Curran, Eoin O Connell, John Falvey, Mark Cronin were all introduced and all helped to turn the game around. Indeed, it was Gerald Curran who struck for the all important winning score when he got on the end of a fine move. All in all a great start to the year and lets hope the lads can keep it going.
