History of
The Alternative Crew on Freedom 92 FM
March 1995 The
Alternative Hour first started in March 1995. The first ever
show was broadcast on a Monday night from 10 until 11pm and
the DJs were AKA Chris Connolly, Captain Earmuff and Mike
B.
April 1995 Following a dispute, AKA Chris
Connolly becomes Nick Holmes and the existing Alternative Crew
are joined by a 4th member, Nicky Nitro.
May
1995 As the Monday night show grows in popularity, two
more members are added to the Alternative Crew, Joe 90 and DJ
Ding-a-Ling join the show.
Summer 1995 Nick
Holmes is abducted by aliens and while trying to escape a
certain gang probing, he is hit by an alien craft. The aliens
nurse him back to health (including numerous gang probes) and
return him to earth as Johnny Turbo. Now with 6 full time
members, the show changes from a traditional radio show to the
current Alternative Hour format.
Christmas
1995 As the show continues to grow more popular, a
second weekly show is added on Wednesday nights from 10 until
11:30pm.
February 1996 A disputed charge
launched by the British Government that the Alternative Crew
were involved in a goat interference party at Buckingham
Palace results in all members of the Alternative Crew losing
their worldwide zoo privileges.
Summer
1996 Following the successful completion of the Leaving
Certificate by all members of the Alternative Crew, Anvil
Cider was replaced by wonderful beer … and Mike B was
sacked.
Christmas 1996 By Christmas of 1996,
Captain Earmuff’s talent as a footballer had been spotted and
a Premiership club signed him. Years of self-abuse resulted in
a failed career. He now lives in a council flat in Nottingham
with his wife and 6 children
March
1997 Following various appearances in clubs around
Dublin (Mostly at the bar), the Alternative Crew hosted a
Battle of the Bands competition. Following an incident at the
after show party, live appearances were not as popular as they
had been and the Alternative Crew made a spectacular return to
the radio waves and a certain incident involving Dublin Fire
Brigade which resulted in large fines for all
concerned.
January 1998 The show, now into
its 3rd year, continued to grow in listenership and got even
more popular when it launched the “Dublin City Inter-College
Drinking Championship” which was eventually won by DIT Bolton
Street.
June 1998 Following the tragic death
of DJ Ding-a-Ling on 4th June 1998, Johnny Turbo, Nicky Nitro
and Joe 90 were re-united with Captain Earmuff and Mike B for
a special tribute show to DJ Ding-a-Ling. The show received
hundreds of messages from fans of the show and fan of DJ
Ding-a-Ling’s DJing style and it was decided that the show
would continue with Johnny Turbo, Nicky Nitro and Joe
90.
August 1998 Early in August 1998, the
Alternative Crew discover cocktails; some even say they
invented them. Following a short time in the United
States…they cannot remember much of 1999.
Christmas
1999 Following an incident involving 15 people, a
special 3 hour Christmas Show and 200 cans of cheap imported
beer, a ten minute conversation is accidentally broadcast to
all of Dublin…resulting in a lengthy
suspension.
January 2001 As rumours of goat
interference surface again, Joe 90 flees to Australia leaving
the Alternative Crew reduced to 2 members, Johnny Turbo and
Nicky Nitro.
February 2002 Joe 90 is cleared
of all charges when the goat admits that it made up the whole
thing and returns to the Alternative Hour.
March
2002 Johnny Turbo is also forced to flee to Australia
following an incident that cannot be mentioned here because of
legal reasons. He is currently living in Australia trying to
clear his name. He has been enlisted by the Australian
Government to train 17 kangaroos for the next Winter
Olympics.
Currently The Alternative Hour
continues every Monday night at 10pm, approaching its 8th year
as the most important program on Freedom FM. Some say that it
is the most important radio show of all time. In fact, the
very idea of radio has been attributed to the Alternative
Crew.
