Spad XIII
The success of the Spad VII led to future developments being based on
the same basic design. The XIII differed from the VII by having a slight
increase in wing span, improved ailerons, and increased power from the Hispano-Suiza
8B engine. The prototype flew on 4 April 1917 and the first Western Front
service was at the end of May 1917. It was flown by French aces such as
Fonck, Guynemer, and Nugesser.
Over 8,000 Spad XIII were built during WWI.
This is the primary B'n'Z aircraft in DoA (if you manage to pull it off).
It is the fastest aircraft in the set. Climb at altitude is not that strong.
Like the Spad VII it is a little nose-heavy with a tendency to dip nose
low in a fight. You do not turn in this aircraft, you use it's speed. Get
fast, get high (relatively), and dive onto the bogey, shoot him with the
2 x Vickers-Maxim Mk.I guns and zoom away. It has a good dive speed but
roll rate puts it down in the last three. It can carry 4 x 20lb Cooper bombs
in "scout mode".
