It also turns with the Camel (F1). It does not seem to be modeled correctly in my estimation and that of our resident historian Sinbad :-) It is something we hope will be fixed in a patch or future version. In the meantime... if you see one and want to engage him make sure of the following:

1) Gooney or Bfouru are not flying it :-)

2) The CL2 in question is high enough to get under

3) You are flying a SE5 with a wing gun

4) Your target stays still long enough for you to use that wing gun. :-)

5) Never, I mean NEVER, put yourself in a position to allow the rear gunner to shoot you.

6) Riddle him with bullets.

Actually you can't win with a cl2 by staying below it. A good pilot will be behind you before you can say s##t!!! I fly cl2 on low level spotting missions, and hardly use the rear gun at all. Best way to attack them is in pairs, not alone, he cant shoot 2 planes at the same time. Also in pairs, if he gets behind 1 of you the other can come back behind him without worries, unless there is a human gunner. Also the Cl2 cant climb worth a darn, so if he is manouvering behind you, don't try to turn with him, climb as much as you can and he won't be able to get his nose high enough to shoot at you. Figured most of this out by flying it myself, not attacking it.

Basically Nathan, the problem is that the CLII was probably right on in ver. 1.2, and was given a power boost for 1.3, so that it could get off the ground carrying ordinance. The F2b was NOT right in 1.2 and it's performance was significantly improved for 1.3, as it should have been.

I do not know why the CLII was beefed up to carry a few grenades, but the effect was to make a very nimble, but underpowered plane, into a superperformer. Unfortunately, I probably started the CLII craze, flying one as a fighter back in December. The difference was that in ver. 1.2, I could fight very effectively in it as long as I had some altitude to work with... once I got to the deck I was in trouble because it did not have the power to sustain a tight turn without stalling, and making a very nasty departure from it's flight envelope. The Camels could eat me up down there, (if the tail sting didn't get them).

Now, in 1.3, it has enough power to use it's turning ability at any alt and is really a "Hot Rod" version of an already good plane. When I made posts to this NG, in December, calling the CLII the "...hidden gem of 1.2", there were zero responses. Few had flown it, and the usual comment you heard on the arena radio was that it was a "pig", because of it's poor climb rate. It is really a sterling performer in the vertical...but few had the patience to climb high enough to find that out (still true).

In it's real life role as a ground attack plane, it was usually given a wide berth by Allied fighters. In THE FIRST WAR PLANES, by W. Barrett it is described as, "...one of the finest two-seater fighters of the war." He goes on to say, "...it was a deadly opponent when engaged in contour flying where few single seaters cared to dive on it." It should be a tough opponent... but not as tough as it is now modeled.

The CL2's rear gunner seems to be a little susceptible to being killed. I like to take them from about 1k above. Dive in from the left or right side riddle them with bullets (aiming for the pilot) on a bending side approach.

Given the speed difference (from diving in)... I pass under them and pull into a loop or yo-yo once in front of them. At this point I circle around, come in right behind them guns blazing doing everything I can to kill the rear gunner (you can always tell when you got the gunner because the plane actually starts turning). Try using left and right rudder to slide back and forth across the back of their plane. If you apply the rudder right you can still manage to concentrate most of your fire on the tail of the plane. Once you get the gunner its a turn fight which the CL2 manages to do pretty well. I know... Blah Blah Blah :)

In any case you are absolutely right that the plane is over modeled. That's why I love to shoot them down :)
