John hails from the County of Laois, doubling the Queen's County quota on the squad because Garrett Culliton is also from the Leinster county. John is in his second term as the chairman of the executive committee of the Irish Wheelchair Association - Sport. He is in semi-retirement (shhh don't tell him because he thinks it's permanent) from Wheelchair Rugby at the moment but he's a young man just coming into his prime so there is a lot of court time ahead of John yet. He is also a member of the Table Tennis squad and I suppose it is fair to say that this is his first love when it comes to competing. Another love of John's is the GAA and he supports the Laois county teams whether they play with the big ball or with the sliother and one mustn't forget his beloved Portlaoise club. John is always a great man for the craic (the Irish word for fun and not d'other thing). He got his nickname Pecks at the classification for the European Wheelchair Championships in Lommel, Belgium in 2003. It seems that the classifiers reckoned he had the best set of pecks they'd seen in a long time. If they think that then it's no wonder they classified Philip Gibson out of the game at those championships.
