Water Problems - Hydrogen Sulphide (Rotten Egg Odour)
Hydrogen Sulphide is a gas by-product of decaying organic matter and sulphate reducing bacteria. Treatment methods generally involve oxidation followed by filtration. Oxidation processes range from chemical treatment (usually chlorine or hydrogen peroxide), ozonation, glauconite greensand or aeration.
A properly configured system will first remove the gas with additional filter equipment to deal with oxidised substances such as elemental sulphur. Further treatment for general water use (toilets, showers, laundry) may be needed to deal with other water problems often associated with Hydrogen Sulphide, "sulphur gas", such as low pH (water is corrosive), iron and manganese.
A final system for the supply of high quality drinking water will also be required to deal with the possibility of sulphates, nitrites, harmful bacteria, parasites...among others.... and to improve taste. The drinking water filter is installed under the kitchen sink. Water is supplied through a separate press-down tap installed on a rear corner of the sink.
A professional Hydrogen Sulphide treatment system will involve multiple systems and various processes. A proper description of a treatment system for your water supply cannot be given without knowing details of the bacteriological and chemical make-up of the water.
