The Fairy Ring

You will find this strange shape in the ground right beside the school. Can you guess what it is? It is a fairy mound or, as we call it on The Heath, a fairy ring. According to tradition, troops of fairies lived underneath these mounds. Fairies were supposed to have the gift of healing, which they could pass on to humans. A leprechaun, incidentally, is a bad-tempered fairy. He carries a crock of gold and, if you can catch him, you can keep the gold. We have never seen one, but he is visible to some American tourists. The word 'leprechaun' comes from lugh meaning 'small' and corpán, which means 'body'.

An Old Pump

This old pump is in Ballydavis. It is not working anymore but, years ago, people used it many times a day to fill buckets, cans etc. The water came from underground springs and it was much colder and fresher than tap-water.
