15th May |
Approach to Beltany Circle.
Heavy rain. |
It's hard to believe that this American Speedwell - Veronica peregrina - is a member of the Speedwell family at all. The only visible connection is the 4-petalled flowers. Flowers are about 4 mm across. |
When identifying Blinks - Montia fontana - I usually look for a plant with no identification features whatsoever. The flowers are minute: about 1mm across.
|
A top shot of Broad Buckler Fern - Dryopteris dilatata - showing the intensely dense foliage, with no wasted space. I'll show a comparison shot with Lady Fern, when it's fully developed. |
Ground Ivy - Glechoma hederacea - covers the south-facing bank at the edge of a field. |
Russian Comfrey - Symphitum x uplandicum - is a former fodder plant, now found on many verges. The roots of Comfrey were once ground and used as a poultice for setting bones. |
Shepherd's Purse - Capsela bursa-pastoris - is easily distingushed by its heart-shaped seedpods. |
