Original Hedgerow, leg 1.

Heavy rain, including the heaviest shower I have ever seen.

This view to the south shows part of the extensive Hawthorn hedge that borders about 400m of fields on this part of the walk. The shelter and high vegetation makes this an excellent environment for insects.

The Nettle Tap - Anthophila fabriciana - is a very common micromoth. I showed the adult on June 8th last year. The lavae live on nettles, making a spinning between leaves.

Many insects adopt a vertical position when sheltering from rain, thereby minimising the upward surface area. Syrphus ribesii.

Seed-head of Lesser Celandine and an under-shot of Creeping Buttercup.

Another un-named Muscid.

Navelwort - Umbilici rupestris - has pushed up a few spikes. These will be in bud for an unusually long time.

A few shots from the wall to the south of the Hedgerow:

Ivy-leaved Toad-flax - Cymbalaria muralis - flowers for much of the year, but is coming to its best, now.

Maidenhair Spleenwort - Asplenium trichomanes.

Rustyback - Ceterach officinalis - and Wall Rue - Asplenium ruta-muraria.
