20th July |
Waste land in town.
Sunny and hot, with a little rain later. |
Up to a couple of years ago, Small Tortoiseshell butterflies were quite scarce on the patch. In 2004 I saw a single specimen the whole year. This year the second brood is very numerous...I'm seeing many each time I'm out. This image has 5: one on the Buddleia and four on the wall. |
This little (9mm.) Capsid is also very common at the moment. The second shot shows the proboscis which is used to suck nectar and other plant juices. Lygocoris pabulinus.
|
Another (and better) shot of the green Soldier Fly that is quite numerous at the moment. About 12mm long. |
Syritta pipiens is one of our smaller Hoverflies, usually less than a centimetre long. I've discussed the inflated thighs before. |
Thistledown already.

A little mystery. A leaf-miner on a hairy Cerastium of some kind (no flowers, yet. And the way the miner is going about its business there won't be any). Maybe Amauromyza flavifrons. |
