21st April |
Mullaghagarry (Steeple) Wood.
Dull but warm. |
The first Bog Violet - Viola palustre - of the year, along with a particularly dark Common Dog Violet - Viola riviniana.
|
The open Horse Chestnut leaves mean that only the Oak has still to show. |
A very young Beech, showing the enormous seed leaves. |
Flowers of the Greater Woodrush have just opened. |
I spotted this Hard Fern unrolling, and as I took the shot I noticed the first Tormentil flower. |
As I bent down to take the shot of the Tormentil, I was startled by a Wren flying out of her nest. |
The nest has 7 eggs. |
I've previously shown the alga Phycopeltis arundinacea on Ivy. Turns out it also affects Holly as well as Rhodondendron, ferns and conifers.
|
Sweet Vernal Grass is earlier than most grasses, as expected. I have, however, seen some Poas and Cocksfoot grass opening on verges at the side of the road. |
The proper Wild Strawberry. I don't think I'll be sampling too many of the fruit: this batch is at the edge of a path frequented by a lot of dog-walkers. |
Yellow Pimpernel has opened, too. |
Back at the house, a House Sparrow fledgeling that was just able to keep up with the parents if they went too far. |
