22nd April

High Heath.

Dull but warm.

A nice shot of a new hoverfly. Certainly a Chrysotoxum, and I think the hairy eyes (2nd shot) make it Chrysotoxum arcuatum.

On an un-promising, dull day, things started to appear. Harestail Cotton Grass.

As the clear-felled plantation begins to revert, new patches of flowers are springing up. I often find these Heath Milkworts in separate patches, but here they are side-by-side.

A little dampness brought out hundreds of slugs. Arion ater.

Heath Woodrush is also springing up in more and more places each year.

A few plants of Lesser Trefoil showed up in the central part of the path.

I've got this as far as Melangyna sp., but I think they're too tricky to id further from such a poor shot.

This is a female Melanostoma. The short abdomen points me to Melanostoma mellinum.

And another pair of Melansotoma sp. on Cardamine.

This muscid hung unmoving on the Willow branch. Maybe it was resting.

Ceratodon purpureus capsules have fully matured now, and make bright red patches amongst the Polytrichums.
