When collecting fungal spores, one technique is to place the fungus on a slide and wait for a day or so. There will then be millions of spores to examine. The technique doesn't usually work for lichens, but after about 2 weeks I got one single little deposit of precisely 8 spores. No wonder lichens don't depend entirely on spores for propagation.
