A trip to Ards forest park - an ancient coastal forest.

There are far too many pictures for one page, so I'll show them over the next few days.

Bright periods (this was one of them) with occasional torrential rain.

I suppose pride of place should go to Amanita phalloides - the Death Cap.

***  NOTE: This is the most deadly of mushrooms. No part of this fungus should ever be consumed ***

This was a single specimen under Beech. The cap was around 10cm across. Note the 'striped' olive cap, the white ring, and the large egg-shaped sac at the base of the stem.

This is one of the Hedgehog mushrooms - Hydnum-rufescens. The smaller photo shows the spikes that replace the more usual gills.

This is Russula mairei - the Beechwood Sickener. I have found it very rare to see a specimen of this mushroom that hasn't been attacked by snails or slugs.

I showed the Common White Helvella the other day. This is the Black Helvella - Helvella lacunosa.

This is the early shoot of Coprinus comatus - The Shaggy Ink-Cap.

About 6 cm. tall.
