The aims of this project are:

To build a user friendly educational web-site that will introduce post leaving certificate and first year third level media students to the range of equipment in a television studio.
To engage the interest and curiosity of the student in seeking further knowledge on the elements and processes that go into making television
To maintain a developing site through responding to the feedback from users

The objectives are:

By clustering the equipment used in the studio to the separate interior surfaces of the studio, namely, the ceiling, the walls and the floor it makes for an orderly structure which allows the learner to become familiar with each group of equipment separately
To present the information in manageable pieces.
By encouraging feedback from site users to use that feedback in the site development and maintenance process.
To engage end users in testing the site as part of the development process.
To have the site available to learners at anytime from any place.

Background:

It is evident from experience in teaching design for television programmes, and from discussions with colleagues that it is not only students but some media teachers also who have a simplistic notion of what is what in a television studio. They also tend to have little or no comprehension on the extent of collaboration from diverse practices that go into getting the simplest of programmes on air.

Relevance and significance:

The reading, research, presentations and tutorials on this course 'Graduate Diploma in Digital Media in Education' have shown the need for emphasis on quality content development, content delivery and content accessibility over a range of products and processes using digital media technology.
One such technology is digital video production in a studio environment where, only through knowledge and understanding of the facilities and equipment will the safe production of content be possible.
The development and accessibility of this web site is a beginning in introducing the novice to the complexities of a television studio. A further development would be to have links to more detailed information in additional sites specialising with the sub-categories such as lighting, cameras, sound and design. This access to greater knowledge of how the equipment and facilities can be used would enhance the potential for innovation and greater value benefit in the content being developed.
The learner in becoming familiar with the potential of the various roles will realise that in order to get the best from the facilities, equipment and operators in the time available, that it is very necessity to plan carefully in advance. This advance planning is termed 'Pre-Production Planning and in turn could be addressed through a separate site dealing with professional practice, theory and critical thinking.
