Studying English

Ireland has two official languages, English and Gaelic. Almost all the people speak English, and they have a soft accent called a brogue. Gaelic is a form of the ancient Celtic language. The Irish government uses both English and Gaelic for official business but in everyday circumstances English is the standard for people and the media.

Ireland has an ever growing number of schools and colleges specialising in the teaching of English as a foreign language. Many people have been attracted here by the world famous names of literature such as James Joyce, Samuel Beckett and George Bernard Shaw. However it more often the ordinary people of Ireland who make the greatest impact on the student. Irish people love to talk! This combined with a friendly and easygoing personality ensures that all students have the opportunities to practice and develop their English skills. Courses are as varied as the students who visit and there is plenty of choice to ensure that there is a course to suit your needs.

People come from all over the world to study in Ireland. The high standards of Irish education and third level institutions are well recognised. Many begin by first improving their English but then entering other courses and pursuing their studies into other areas.

One of the major attractions for the visitor is that Ireland does not get as swamped by foreign students as some other destinations. A real multicultural atmosphere exists in the schools as people from many different background and countries mix enjoying each other and the attractions of Ireland and the Irish.
