A Message from The Chairman of The IWFPS

The new millennium brings a challenge to the people of Ireland. Over the past decade water quality in respect of our magnificent rivers and lakes has declined at an alarming rate. We are informed that the two major causes are pollution from agricultural practices in relation to the use of phosphate based fertilizers and totally inadequate sewage systems which allow domestic detergents, high in phosphate products, to enter the waterways.

The purpose of the IWFPS is to bring to the attention of the general public, Local Authorities and Government the damage which is being caused to the environment by the accelerating use of excessive amounts of phosphorus based products.

The implications for the future of our environment are disastrous unless action is taken now before the situation becomes totally out of control.

The membership of the IWFPS are a dedicated group of environmentally aware people who intend to monitor water quality on the River Shannon System on a regular basis, we will bring the results to the attention of the public and the appropriate authorities, we shall also investigate all other reports of pollution to the Rivers and lakes in our area. A pollution free environment for the children of Ireland is their right, their safety on our waterways is our priority.

Angling tourism, which makes a considerable contribution to local economies, has suffered badly over the past few years, we intend to make every endeavor to bring about restoration of our fish stocks by improving water quality throughout the region and to ensure a safe pollution free environment for our children and future generations.
