Computer Science Project

This project was completed in the final year of a Double Honours B, Sc. in Computer Science and Experimental Physics.  Entitled:

"Attacking the Data Encryption Standard (DES) using the Birthday Paradox",

it describes how DES was cracked using a key collision attack in Java.

I presented a paper on the project at the PPPJ 2003 conference in Kilkenny.  The Powerpoint presentation which summarizes the project may be downloaded here.

Presentation (146 kB)

The paper itself can be downloaded in PDF format.  If Adobe Acrobat is installed on your computer it should open automatically:

A Java implemented key collision attack on the Data Encryption Standard, John Loughran, Tom Dowling (78 kB)

Alternately the full text of the project, including appendices and references, presented as a zipped collection of MS Word and Excel documents may be downloaded here.
